Beautiful Invaders
Originally native to eastern Asia and to the Americas, the Hydrangea was introduced to Aotearoa by early European settlers.  As an immigrant species they have been relatively innocuous, quietly assimilating to New Zealand without endangering indigenous flora and fauna. These plants change according to their surroundings, the colour of their flowers affected by the acidic or alkaline character of the soil in which they grow. The Hydrangeas used in this work are from the banks of the Whanganui River and its surrounds.
